FAVORITE MUSICAL THEATRE SONGS

What attracts me to a particular Broadway show tune?  I'm not so sure - I've heard thousands of them - I think the lyrics first of all.  Most of these songs have very powerful lyrics - a strong message, a moving love song (most of them unrequited - what musicals do best :-)  And a haunting (not necessarily hummable) melody certainly helps!   I've included some of the lyrics for each song - I'm sure they'll also give you interesting insight into what moves me ...

When I first listen to a show, I busy myself with some other activity.  If the music forces me to stop and listen, I know it's a song I like.  These songs, by the way, are not necessarily from my favorite musicals ... and there are even some from my least favorite shows!  Once again, these are in alphabetical order.

"A QUIET THING"
from
FLORA THE RED MENACE
When it all comes true, just the way you've planned -
it's funny, but the bells don't ring
 ... it's a Quiet Thing.

"AND I AM TELLING YOU
I'M NOT GOING"
from
DREAMGIRLS
There's no way, no way I'm living without you.
I'm not living without you, I don't wanna be free -
I'm staying and you're gonna love me.

"BACK TO BEFORE"
from
RAGTIME
There are people out there unafraid
of revealing that they might have a feeling
or they might have been wrong.

"DON'T RAIN ON MY PARADE"
from
FUNNY GIRL
Don't tell me not to fly,
I've simply got to.
If someone takes a spill,
it's me and not you.

"ENDLESS NIGHT"
from
THE LION KING
You promised you'd be there whenever I needed you ...
whenever I call your name,
you're not anywhere.

"FINISHING THE HAT"
from
SUNDAY IN THE PARK
WITH GEORGE
Finishing the hat.
How you have to finish the hat.
How you watch the rest of the world through a window while you finish the hat.

"HEAVEN HELP MY HEART"
from
CHESS
If it were love I would give that love every second I have -
and I do ...

"HOW CAN I WIN?"
from
THE GOODBYE GIRL
And though I tell myself it's safer just to hide,
how can I win if I keep retreating?
Cheating myself is self-defeating.
How can I win if I'm not on my side?

"HOW COULD I EVER KNOW?"
from
THE SECRET GARDEN
Forgive me -
can you forgive me and hold me in your heart?
And find some new way to love me,
now that we're apart.

"I ONLY WANT TO SAY
(GETHSEMANE)"
from
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR
Show me there's a reason for your wanting me to die -
you're far too keen on where and how and not so hot on why.

"I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU"
from
SIDE SHOW
Evermore and always
we'll be one though we're two,
for I will never leave you.

"I WISH I COULD FORGET YOU"
from
PASSION
And should you die tomorrow,
another thing I see -
your love will live in me.

"I'LL COVER YOU (REPRISE)"
from
RENT
I think they meant it when they said you can't buy love.
Now I know you can't rent it -
a new lease you were,
my love, on life.

"IN WHATEVER TIME WE HAVE"
from
CHILDREN OF EDEN
In whatever time we have,
for as long as we are living,
we can face whatever comes
if we face it now as one.

"IT DON'T MAKE SENSE"
from
PARADE
No, it don't make sense to me that she won't be around.
No, it don't make sense to me to put her in the cold and lonely ground.
And no, it don't make sense the way the world can let you fall -
I swear it don't make sense to me at all.

"IT'S ONLY LOVE/
BRING ON THE NIGHT"
from
METROPOLIS
If it's only love, shouldn't be enough to break my heart.
If it's only love ... it's only love.

"LOSING MY MIND"
from
FOLLIES
You said you loved me,
or were you just being kind?
Or am I losing my mind?

"LOUDER THAN WORDS"
from
TICK, TICK ... BOOM!
Cages or wings - which do you prefer?
Ask the birds ...  Fear or love, baby?
Don't say the answer -
actions speak louder than words.

"LOVE TO ME"
from
THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA
This is how I know.
This is what I see.
This is love to me.

"MAKE OUR GARDEN GROW"
from
CANDIDE
(The GREATEST musical theatre song EVER written!)
Let dreamers dream what worlds they please -
those Edens can't be found.
The sweetest flowers, the fairest trees, are grown in solid ground.

"MAMA WILL PROVIDE"
from
ONCE ON THIS ISLAND
That's what a mama's worth,
to give her child the earth.
And whatever you need -
mama will provide!

"MEADOWLARK"
from
THE BAKER'S WIFE
And what can I do if finally, for the first time,
the one I'm burning for returns the glow?
If love has come at last, it's picked the worst time -
still I know, I've got to go.

"NO MORE"
from
INTO THE WOODS
Running away - we'll do it.
Why sit around, resigned?
Trouble is, son, the farther you run, the more you feel undefined.
For what you have left undone and, more, what you've left behind.

"NOT A DAY GOES BY"
from
MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG
Not a day goes by, not a blessed day,
but you're still somewhere part of my life.
And you won't go away.
And I have to say, if you did, I'd die.

"NOT ME"
from
AIDA
And who'd have guessed I'd throw my world away to be with someone I'm afraid will say
... not me.

"ON MY OWN"
from
LES MISERABLES
Without me, his world will go on turning.
A world that's full of happiness that I have never known.
I love him, but only on my own.

"TIME HEALS EVERYTHING"
from
MACK & MABEL
Some Tuesday, Thursday, April, August, autumn, winter, next year, some year
... time heals everything, but loving you.

FAVORITE FILMS

When I finished with this list, I thought it seemed like a really strange mix of titles - but these are definitely my favorite films.  These are the ones I could watch over and over, the ones I would take with me to that desert island if I could take nothing else (assuming a VCR and DVD player with working electricity!).  They vary from irreverent comedies to musicals to epic love stories to children's movies to classic scifi.  Maybe you like some of them as well - and if you haven't seen some of these titles, run out and rent them TODAY (of course, bear in mind that not all these films are suitable for all ages :-)!  Again, these are in alphabetical order:
